“Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
― Anonymous Greek Proverb
If he's like all the other mentors I've seen in fiction, he's not gonna be around long enough to impart a fraction of what he wants to tell him...
That does seem to be a storytelling truth, and maybe it's a good lesson. When we stay apprentices under a master too long, we never learn for ourselves, never innovate. The master is there to teach us just enough and then shove us on up the road to start making our own journeys, our own learning.
